Abstract
One of the most fundamental questions in biology entails the origin of forms and their functions of biological tissues.  The fascinating ability of cells in biological tissues to self-organize to achieve high-order architectures and functions is a central question in developmental biology and regenerative medicine.  Understanding the emergent complexity will also provide new opportunities in biomanufacturing and tissue engineering.  A goal of my research is to elucidate the fundamental design rules in biological self-organization, such as tissue morphogenesis and repair.  In particular, we incorporate biomanufacturing of 2D/3D tissue models, microfabrication for creating microenvironmental cues, nanobiotechnology for single-cell measurement and perturbation, and agent-based computational modeling into a systems framework to engineer collective cell behaviors.  In this talk, I will discuss the application of this nanoengineered systems framework for investigating the mechanoregulation of collective cell behaviors, such as re-epithelialization after injury and capillary morphogenesis.

Biography
Dr. Wong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center and Bio5 Institute at the University of Arizona.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2005.  He is an editor in the IEEE Nanotechnology Magazine.  He has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles in the area of nanotechnology and biomedical engineering, and is an inventor of two issued or pending patents.  His current research interest focuses on mechanoregulation of tissue morphogenesis and electrokinetic manipulation for clinical diagnostics.  Among other honors, Dr. Wong was awarded the NIH Director's New Innovator Award in 2010, Arizona Engineering Faculty Fellow in 2011, AAFSAA outstanding Faculty Award in 2013, and JALA 10 – A Top 10 Breakthrough in Innovation in 2014.
